Kathryn Purwin, a licensed pilot, serves as the CEO of Helinet Aviation. The company offers airborne cinematography and medical airlift services using its large fleet of helicopters. Helinet Aviation was founded more than two decades ago. Today, it works working closely with film and television crews and assists medical facilities with the transportation of transplant organs.
The company has a long-standing association with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where Kathryn Purwin serves as a member of the board of trustees. For the past two decades, Helinet has provided emergency transport services to CHLA free of charge.
Children’s Hospital got its start in 1901 as the first-ever pediatric hospital in the Los Angeles area. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson inaugurated its new facility via telegraph. With the touch of a button, he remotely lit up the building.
CHLA now houses the sole freestanding Level I trauma center for pediatric patients in Los Angeles County. It has earned the approval of the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma and the county’s health services department.
Other pioneering CHLA departments include a children’s hemophilia treatment facility that was, at its inception in the 1970s, among the first in the nation. The hospital also drove forward with early 20th century innovations in the treatment of heart disease and in the development of physical therapy programs.
Today, CHLA is also home to one of the country’s largest pediatric transport programs, whose success is due in part to its collaboration with Helinet.
